A great true story from honda club phils’ forum

Notice: Before reading this story, I would like to inform you that this story was dapted from ulop.net post which according to the person who posted this, he read it from honda club phils’ forum and if ever I am violating any rule from honda phils’ club website/forum, please inform me. I’ll delete it as soon as I will receive your message. Many thanks!

The post goes like this:

Good Morning.

I cant post this on any forum because your i am not allowed to do so (im not really sure why, bec im new i guess hehe). So i decided to send you a personal message since you are heading this club. I would like to share a story of (i guess) one of your members based on a sticker i saw in his car. It’s a gray Honda Civic with plate number ULV 633. The sticker says EK Elite. I dont know what does that stand for until i saw another car with the same sticker but has a HCP Sticker at the back windshield and i saw the url so i assumed that hey are under 1 club. i decided to check the url and saw that it is honda club of the Philippines.

Anyways, here is the story.

Me and a friend was having lunch at hotrocks in libis (near cub 650) when a couple entered the resto. The lady was pregnant. They sat down in the table right behind us. They ordered and waited for their food. While waiting, i noticed a really old lady holding a piece of paper outside the resto. I think they saw it too because the guy, a quite tall guy went out and approaced and talked to the old lady. The young man took the paper the d lady was holding and held the old lady’s hand and asked her to come inside the resto. He offered the lady a chair beside hiw wife. I heard the man say “babalik ako” and he went out and drove his car. The wife and old lady started talking but the old lady couldnt barely speak i think because of her age. The food came and the wife and old lady started eating (since the couple ordered, there are two plates, i think the food for the man was given to the old lady). After around 20 mins, the man returned, parked his car in front of the resto, went inside holding a plastic bag from mercury drug store. He handed over the plastic bag to the old lady and the old lady started weeping. She was crying while he embraced the young man. She also gave the lady a hug. I heard the old lady say “salamat sa inyo. maraming salamat. pagpalain sana kayo ng Maykapal” The lady started to walk away still weeping tears from her eyes then she went out of the resto. We looked at the old lady walk away. I heard the man tell his wife, “sabe sa mercury, gamot daw yun for brain cancer stage 3″

As my friend and i walked out of the resto, i told her that i was dumbstruck. I could have done something to also help out the lady. But wasnt able to do so because i was so amazed.

I would like to salute whoever the couple was. God was with you that day.

If you would like to share this to other members of the club so that this can reach the couple, please do. Just let them know that their deeds didnt go unnoticed. Thanks.

My SmartBro

Yes, I want to talk about my SmartBro connection in our house. The canopy/antenna was installed and my connection to the internet has materialized last March 2007. So it has been 1 year already but this month I had put it to “temporary disconnection” since I don’t have the finances to support it already, hehehe.

As per connection of its downstream and upstream, I didn’t have problems with it. The last time that I experienced lag time was when I wasn’t able to access the net but that was once only and never did it happen again. My area is in Bagumbong, Cal. City (North) and as far as the relay antenna is concern, according to the agent that I applied with, it was just in the baranggay adjacent to us, so it’s near. It’s 2-3 kms. only from where we live.

At first I was hesitant to subscribe from SmartBro because of the things I was hearing and the messages I have read from different forums. Nevertheless, since I didn’t have any other options because PLDT at that time was forcing SmartBro to places that they want to saturate, I was forced to get subscription from them. Also, Bayantel didn’t have existing lines in our area until now, I think. According to a person we’ve talked with, it’s because they haven’t got any approval from the office of the ”upper” in the city hall. I thought, oh, that’s it, you know? Hehehe.

By the way, when I made the “disconnection” notice in their wireless center in Ayala, Makati, I didn’t think they have this “temporary disconnection” as I have mentioned earlier. This will enable you to postpone them from pulling-out their canopy until further notice to them that you will continue or totally discontinue your subscription. But this is only valid from 6 months of your notice to them. There’s a minimal charge to pay though but I thought this is worth the hassles that they will do in pulling-out the canopy from the roof of our house, hehehe. And so I paid.

Until now I’m still enjoying the connection but it will be until April 10 only. Thanks to SmartBro. (I should have to be paid with this testimony, hehehe).

The strength I see in President GMA

With the desires of many people to unseat Mrs. Arroyo from her throne, there was no one who succeeded until today. I just don’t know these next days. I think she really has the command and power to many in position most especially to those she designated or assigned in a certain positions.

I believe many of us know that the “control” is there because of what she has been doing, like what I have mentioned above. Also, she really feeds his goats to become sheep and make her their shepherd. Mrs. Arroyo is wise as I can see. She really knows what she is doing. You can’t really put her down as you wish.

This point should be the consideration of the people who want her out of her office. One thing that I can see which makes the oppositions not able to succeed over her is that they lack “unity”. PGMA knows this much, she know what to feed her goats and she know when to feed them.

Although you may not agree with me that I consider it as strength of Mrs. Arroyo, it’s actually what is happening. If I have to put it in basketball, she really has always the edge because she can see the movements of her rivals and what is happening to her teammates though she doesn’t actually have the “heights”. She uses the powerful thing in her head. And she doesn’t normally talks too much, she listens and she observes like a beast in the wilderness to catch his prey.

“Consistency”

What is consistency for me! Should it be applied in my web designs? Is it an important consideration in my layout?

Well, consistency for me should be applied in different ways or variations depending on to where you will apply and to what you will do. Consistency should be visible in the total effect of your designs, like look and feel (colors and other elements) and the total effect of your design perspective.

Consistency maybe absent in layouts that does not need strict compliance of “structureship” like when you want different images, sizes of elements, line styles and background effects. You can have a design that will probably have different positioning of elements most especially in the homepage but still be consistent most especially when you get into the inner pages. By the way, consistency will be in the “eyes of the beholder”. Of course, this will always be dependent on your client. But again, being inconsistent in some part your design doesn’t mean “a rejected and unusable” design. Everything goes for me.

A feeling of regret and pity

Oh yeah! It’s been two months since I’ve got my latest blog post, now I’m back. This time peeps I would just want to comment for a company which doesn’t utilize (good utilization) its resources (it’s people). This company has great people willing to work with utmost quality and quantity output with regards to their respective talents/jobs but are, I think, are not doing it well because of mismanagement among the executives.

This is all I can say; they have to see the capabilities, enthusiasm, and love of work of their employees.

CSS: id or class?

It was just the first quarter of this year when I started using pure CSS implementations in some of the websites I did.  Table less they say, as part of “Web 2.0” is the current trend in website design and development today.  Well, contrary, when you’ll view on the source codes of Yahoo, MSN and Google, you will still see “table” codes but very minimal (as of this writing), I think it’s more on the prerogative of their developers.  But if I’m not mistaken about a couple of years ago, their codes were still in table format.  In fairness, as a designer (and sometimes a developer), myself, seeing the “table” code is reasonable enough.  They have to use it, I think.  Nevertheless, as I said, it’s the common “norm” now in website design and development.  Although for reasons of speed and if the client is not too much sensitive in the use of such trend in coding, I still use tables for other projects.

Well, going back to the topic per se, when using ID or CLASS, I think it would be up to the coder.  As a basic concept, a CLASS can be use as many times as one need it in one kind of tag (i.e. <td>) while an ID can be applied in all kinds of tags that uses it (i.e. <td>, <table>, <font>, etc.).  For me, I use ID and CLASS depending on the usage I know it will fit in my code.  I sometimes use it to give value to the design of my code and even for the reason of Search Engine Optimization, also for deployment purposes in the web.   I have read a book sometime ago that for faster loading of page, you need to consider the number of letters and spaces being read or recognized by browsers.  This is similar to reducing the size of an image in order for any browser to load such particular image faster.

So, as I have said in the previous part of this article, I think it would be choice of the coder or programmer to what will he use if its ID or CLASS.  But maybe, many will go in contradiction to my opinion.  Well it’s just an opinion anyway, that’s why it is called an opinion. LOL.

CSS “child selector” – your website to work both for IE (except IE7) and Firefox

I have worked with websites that did not have problems with regards to browser compatibility issue. Those, I think were the ordinary and simple websites, though from among the complicated website (templates) that I’ve done, a few required to really digging in deeper to be able to work mostly both for Internet Explorer and Netscape or Firefox, that is without using “child selector” in CSS. These used only browser detection javascripts or other scripts that can be applied possibly just to meet the requirements. Of course with this kind of solution, you are saying that you need more time, exert more effort, consume more resources, etc. Before knowing “child selector”, I wasn’t able to perfect similar layout or look for the websites that I made for both Internet Explorer and Firefox.

Last year, as I was doing a website for one of the companies I worked with, I came across this problem again and this time would like an output perfectly similar look for both IE (except for IE7) and FF. I have searched the internet and came across this vibrant solution of using CHILD SELECTOR and…voila! … I made a 99% similar look and feel of just one website without using other scripts but only CSS.

For Internet Explorer (I think for IE5 and 6 but not IE7; it will recognize child selector), you’ll have your normal css code and then followed by the code with child selector. The css line with the child selector will be skipped by IE and the one with child selector will be used by Firefox (and I think by Opera and other browsers also). Below is an example of codes I used:

td.pagitan1 { height:13px;}

html>body td.pagitan1 { height:6px;}

You see, the first line will be used by IE (again, except for IE7) and the second line by Firefox and other browsers. The “html>body” is the child selector used. So basically, IE will use the height of 13 pixels while FF will use the height of 6 pixels. Others tell that a space between the child selector and the tag will not work fine like the one in our example but as far as I am concern and with respect to the codes for websites that I made, it worked fine.

Now for those of you who have not done this or who don’t know this technique yet, try it! God Bless!

Microsoft Surface – A History Innovated

As I was chatting with my officemate yesterday, he gave me a url of ‘Microsoft’s Surface’ and I followed the link. And seeing at the first glance of what it is, I was blown away. Really, that this ‘Microsoft Surface’ is an innovation making history. Microsoft Surface for a short information, is a “30-inch tabletop display whose unique abilities allow several people to work independently or simultaneously, all without using a mouse or a keyboard ” – definition by Microsoft. The table is a “touch screen”.

But what is “Surface” really for? I was not so amazed (not so, compared to the other breakthroughs of this product, but of course I did) with the capability of resizing, flipping, rotating of the images you have (in the ‘Surface’) digitally (with the use of your fingertips). Also, if you have movies (clips), you can actually play them. Imagine, like the things you can do with images, you’ll manipulate the controls of any movie with your fingertips. What made me crazy is the ability of Surface to transfer contents of gadgets to another gadget. When you place your gadget, let’s say your phone, on the ‘Surface’, automatically the Surface will detect the contents of your phone and display them and in return you can transfer whatever content you want to another gadget, again by just using your fingertips.

One more amazing capability of Surface is the ability to detect what you place on it. Like for instance you placed a cold drinks on the Surface, it will play and display simulations about it, it’s so really nice, you’ll see. Also, I think (as presented), when you want to search for locations, you can just drag and store that in your gadget. And there’s a lot more to see. You can follow this link to discover yourself about Surface. http://www.microsoft.com/surface/

What do you think?

I have been into web design and development for seven years now. But my forte has always been in designing. I have been involved in several web development projects that used PhP and MySQL. I agree that I’m not a programmer in terms of the development process, so I seek advices from PhP programmers and in the net but I have done several projects already that involved PhP and MySQL. With regards to tips in coding, I found the tutorials in the net good but it seems that I am not always able to apply in the PhP codes that I make. Although I have snippets from them applied in one way or the other. I had always wanted to learn more about PhP, ASP and even JSP that’s why I often do researches in the net.

With regards to web designing, I use more of Adobe Photoshop and some small applications that are free to download in the net. When it comes to rendering my ideas and applies my creativity in a particular design, I am more proficient using any tool combinations available. In terms of familiarity on the menu items or shall I say the “site map” of Photoshop, I rank myself average. It has always been easier for me and more familiar in the usages of tools than answering a question like, “What comes next after CROP under the IMAGE main menu item?” You see, I even opened my Photoshop before I finished the quoted sentence I mentioned.

Now, to the application. It’s a great thing that I have enough imagination and creative ideas in designing a website (well, that’s my decision, hehehe) but sometimes we go into being “blank”. What I do when these times come is get off my chair, walk a bit farther from my place, look out the window or even go out the building and try to look for something “inspirational”. What I always like to look at are on trees or plants that are present near my work (if there are). It really relieves me a lot. Sometimes also, getting a short nap or closing my eyes a few minutes will do. Also, I do visit other sites most especially those that provide tutorials on anything with regards to web design and development. There are lots of websites that you can go to in the internet for ideas. But of course, I warn you, don’t copy, and just get ideas. Well, I think there are websites that gave out free templates for designers (I haven’t tried one yet and I don’t want to do it). I believe that I can do better enough than getting all the way the design from free templates. And I feel that when I do that, I’m useless, I feel that I haven’t done anything. More posts for this category to follow….
